Instagram Shopping Update 2019 – How will this impact retailers?

April 15, 2025

Instagram is launching a checkout feature in the UK, allowing users to purchase directly in the app. Discover how this update will benefit retailers and enhance the shopping experience.

You may have heard the news this March!

A huge update is coming soon to the UK for Instagram and a massive opportunity for businesses can take their social media to the next level.

Instagram has announced they’re launching a checkout process within the Instagram app – so now not only can you ‘tap to shop’, you can actually make a purchase all within the Instagram application, without having to go onto the retailer’s website.

But how does this impact retailers?

At FUTCOM when Instagram first launched their taggable products feature, we added this tech to all of our clients and saw impressive results in terms of click-through rate and purchases through the platform. It was amazing! It allowed retailers to cut out all the middle steps that can turn a lot of users away, and take customers straight to the product page.

Now the process is as simple as 1, 2, 3. All you need to enter is your name, email, address and payment details (just once). Customers will be taken to a “Checkout on Instagram” option, which will lead to a page where they can select product options like size and color.

Once these options are selected, shoppers can pay right from the app, using their stored payment details. The app will even track orders from shipment to delivery, sending you push notifications for dispatch and arrival.

The feature is only currently available to a handful of US retailers including Adidas Women, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Balmain, Burberry, ColourPop, Dior, Huda Beauty, KKW, Kylie Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics, Michael Kors, NARS, Nike Training, Nike Women, NYX Cosmetics, Oscar de la Renta, Ouai Hair, Outdoor Voices, Prada, Revolve, Uniqlo, Warby Parker and Zara. The company plans to work with many more retailers soon, so keep an eye out for more news and updates!

So what does the future hold? Will Facebook adapt this feature too? Will any other tech giants follow in Instagram’s footsteps? Who knows…

We’re extremely excited here at FUTCOM for this feature to come to the UK! Keep an eye out on our blog for updates.
